June 13 Board meeting review: Resolutions, Parcel Tax, Literacy, Shoreline and Parent Drivers

Resolutions in Support and Recognition of: National Arab American Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and the LGBTQ+ Pride Month:
The Board of Trustees passed several resolutions to recognize and support various nationally recognized heritage and awareness months. These recognitions are not only important because of the significant contributions these groups have made to the U.S., but also reinforces that all are seen and welcome in MVWSD. Students, staff, and families are all encouraged to acknowledge the passage of these resolutions this month and always. Read the resolutions here: National Arab American Heritage Month. Jewish American Heritage Month. LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

parcel taxParcel Tax Election Approval: Trustees approved a parcel tax for the November ballot. The revenue it will raise will replace expiring parcel tax revenue. The Trustees approved a rate of 15 cents per building square foot with a cap on the amount any one parcel could pay. Read more here

Shoreline Agreement: Residents value good schools as an essential community service. MVWSD provides educational excellence at a bit of a disadvantage, however. Some of MVWSD’s revenue comes from the Shoreline Regional Park Community, a special tax district that redirects tax revenue from MVWSD to the City. The City redistributes some money back to the schools, but it is only a portion of MVWSD’s entire share. While this issue needs to be addressed in the long-term, the Trustees approved a short-term agreement for the District’s portion of the revenue for the coming year.
Read the agreement here.

literacyEarly Literacy: In response to student performance data and to set up our students for academic success, the district formed an Early Literacy Team this school year to support students at Castro, Mistral, Monta Loma, and Theuerkauf. The Team's focus was to support early learners in grades K-2 with the foundational literacy skills of phonological awareness, phonics, and high frequency words. Because of the combined efforts of classroom teachers and the Early Literacy Team, students at the early literacy sites made tremendous growth in the focus areas! Among first- and second-graders at the schools served, over 40% moved out of tier 3 (2 or more grade levels below) in phonics and over 40% moved into tier one (at or below grade level) in phonics. Read more here.

Field Trips & Parent Drivers: In the 2023-2024 school year, MVWSD stopped allowing parents to drive on field trips due to safety and equity concerns. At the Board’s request, staff presented options for parent drivers to be used for field trip transportation that minimizes liability for MVWSD and increases safety for students. The Board approved parent drivers for next year with additional safety measures. Read more here.
